GENERAL RULES
*** PLEASE text me if you are planning to not show up at your regular scheduled time.
A. EQUIPMENT CARE
-
WHEELS - Clean ALL areas of the wheels including foot pedals; turn off when done; place foot pedals on top (where there is a separate one); and stack stools under shelves. Carefully attach wheel pans as the plastic is brittle & can break when jammed together.
-
SLAB ROLLER - PLEASE be gentle with the wheel when putting onto the bracket for use. Use the canvas appropriate to your clay colour. DO NOT over stress the slab roller as it can break the springs inside. Follow directions on the wall for best practice and success of your work. See appendix A
-
EXTRUDER - Choose the die of choice and use the allen key to tighten nuts. Please tighten each side a bit and switch to the other side and back and forth. If you tighten one side entirely the risk is that the welds will break or warping of metal will happen. Clean all parts thoroughly after use!
-
HAND TOOLS - Wash them and put away in labeled bins/hooks. Please inform me of any breakage or need for replacement.
-
WEDGING TABLE - Wipe thoroughly after use and put all tools & clay away in your designated spot.
B. CLAY - You must purchase clay from me and prices are listed above. RECYCLING of clay is your job and any trimmed bits are yours to deal with. The slop water from throwing can go in a slop bucket. BUT make sure no tools are thrown away into a slop bucket.
C. GLAZE - 6 to 8 food safe glazes are available for your use. They are as follows: Shiny White, Turquoise, Black, Green, Blue, Plum Brown & Yellow Coral. A few commercial paint on glazes are available and Stroke & Coat for underglazing and highlighting. (Note: due to the extreme costs of a few ingredients certain glazes will not be available for student use - Opal, Satin White & Green).
D. GLAZING - The Steps are also on the wall in the Wet Work area and in the Glaze room.
-
Sand all rough spots outside after bisque firing (this can be done during greenware stage too)
-
Wipe ALL dust off or glazes will not stick.
-
Wax all of the bottoms of pieces & 5-8mm up sides of pieces. Wax can also be used to design a resist imagery. Only use labelled WAX brushes.
-
ALL glazes must be stirred thoroughly before use and between each application, give it a swirl. DO NOT put a stir stick into another glaze or it will contaminate them.
-
DIP, POUR or PAINT glazes onto pieces with Dips of a MAXIMUM of 3 SECONDS.
-
ONLY 2 GLAZE DIPS (per piece) ALLOWED - If doing a second overglaze keep the dip to 1 Second per glaze.
-
Thoroughly wipe off areas that will touch the kiln shelf. (IF they are not wiped or glazed too heavily I will NOT load them into the kiln as the glaze will ruin my very expensive shelves).
-
Load onto board and bring to Kiln Shed. Be careful not to touch others' work or you may knock off pieces of their glaze.
-
Record your pieces with a description & glazes used onto sheets provided.
-
CLEAN ALL GLAZING TOOLS and WIPE BUCKETS OFF.
E. FIRING - Bisque & Glaze Firing is included with your purchase of clay. Your work must be collected within 2 months of final glaze firing or it will be disposed of.
F. KILN - Do not empty or load the kiln without permission or place anything on the lid or edges. The kiln brick is really soft and bumping it can cause damage. Do not enter the kiln shed if the kiln is firing due to safety concerns.
G. CLEAN UP - Please clean up all tools and equipment as noted above. MOP or SWEEP up floors around your work area. Do not let water accumulate on floors as it is a danger for slippage.
Clay Water must be disposed of into blue buckets or Slop Bucket (Outside) and rinse water from glazing put in a Labeled Bucket in the Glaze Room (I let it settle out and dispose of it safely). WIPE ALL surfaces
H. CREATIVITY & THE WORK PLACE - The creative spirit needs to be nurtured and strengthened in a safe space to talk, share ideas and laugh with those who are enjoying the creative process too. Please be encouraging and considerate of volume or choice of language if others are sharing the space with you.

I hereby agree to the following terms and conditions for the pottery studio use and will do my utmost to adhere to them.
